Kinetic Pulses
A Reflection of The Rhythms And Vibrations Of New York City’s Perpetual Energy.
2009-2016
Out of curiosity, I recently asked AI in 2025 to describe New York City’s energy in one word. It answered right away: “Electric.” I couldn’t agree more with the answer. There are some very pretty pictures of NYC out there for tourists and locals to purchase, but for me, whenever I see cityscapes, I never really feel they encapsulate its core, its soul. I don't think NYC can be described as a pretty city. Paris is pretty in contrast. However, New York City is unique, gritty and unstoppable, always on the move. In 2009 and through the years, I set out to start this project with the intent to make a series of images relating to its core. Kinetic Pulses take you through a reflection of the rhythms and vibrations of the city's perpetual energy.
I’ve always wanted to make pictures that reflect its vibrant vitality that is both chaotic and exhilarating. It's a place where the sound of taxi horns mixes with the chatter of bustling crowds, creating a constant hum of activity, sounds, smells and sights. It is aggressive to the senses with an “in your face” attitude. Day or night, the streets are alive with the colors and sounds of diverse cultures, from food vendors to musicians and other street performers. Neighborhoods offer unique vibes making NYC a ceaseless mosaic of creativity, culture and spirit.
In order to translate that energy, I used the exact same element that AI used to describe the city in 2025: Electricity ( only 16yrs earlier.) After a long reflexion about how I could achieve what I wanted to portrait, I realized that, if I used the city’s electricity, both as a tool to “paint with light” and a metaphor for its energy, I could visually create dynamic, powerful, chaotic, vibrant, gritty and raw visuals. These new and completely unique cityscapes make sense to me about how I feel they represent the city I know & love. It may not show its "pretty" side but instead all of its movement, spirit and heart! Come on NYC my love! You are chaos and I Love You!
